Moroccan cannabis agency permits local seed cultivation

A reliable source told Hespress that as of the current crop year, the National Agency for the Legalization of Activities Related to Cannabis will permit the growth of the Moroccan Cannabis seed, also referred to as the “Beldiya.”

Furthermore, according to an agency source, the National Office for Sanitary Safety of Food Products (UNSA) and the latter will issue permits for the “Beldiya” beginning in the agricultural year 2024 under the existing legislation and protocols.

During the agricultural year 2023, the local cannabis plant was not grown legally, and thus the legal crop for this year was limited to planting imported seeds following the established procedure.

The National Agency in question entered into a three-year contract with the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) to research the characteristics of this plant, so the plant cultivation will start concurrently with the anticipated research on it.

The contract is for a three-year, MAD 10-million research study on local variations to develop them and register them as Moroccan products.

Remarkably, the National Agency for the Legalization of Activities Related to cannabis declared on Thursday the beginning of the 2024 growing season for cannabis and its derivatives, a move that follows the local Chefchaouen province’s agricultural season.

Around 80 participants in the cannabis manufacturing and processing industry attended the inaugural meeting. These included five pharmaceutical institutions producing pharmaceutical materials, 13 processing cooperatives operating in three regions, and 62 companies, 50 of which had already signed contracts with production cooperatives.

A total of 277 hectares were cultivated in 2023 for the benefit of 32 production cooperatives, which employed 416 farmers. Based on 21 import licenses issued by the National Office for Sanitary Safety of Food Products and registered at the customs level, the organization used 2.1 million hemp seeds to complete this operation throughout the previous year.

Out of 1.063 applications, the National Agency for the Legalization of Activities Related to Cannabis had granted 609 licenses as of the end of November last year.

179 licenses were awarded for cannabis conversion activities, of which 47 were for industrial uses, 7 for medical uses, 51 for marketing uses, 54 for export uses, 17 for seed import uses, and 3 for transportation uses. Additionally, a total of 430 licenses were granted to farmers for the production and cultivation of cannabis.
