The investigating judge in charge of financial crimes at the Marrakesh Court of Appeal ordered on Thursday that the head of the Bigoudine commune be placed under custody, on suspicion of his involvement in squandering, embezzling public funds and forgery.
He ordered that judicial surveillance measures be taken against the rest of the suspects, and that they remain under police custody until the investigation is completed.
This decision comes after the six accused faced corruption and embezzlement charges after the Marrakesh-South Regional District of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds filed a complaint before authorities.
Mohammed El Ghaloussi, President of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Funds, said: “Our country is experiencing delicate circumstances at all levels, in which broad social categories and segments are bearing the bill of the economic and social crisis (high prices, drought, water scarcity, inflation, corruption, and bribery), in the meantime, a limited group benefits from wealth illegally by exploiting public decision-making positions and public funds.”
El Ghaloussi continued in a press statement: “All of this and more requires declaring a relentless war against corruption and the plundering of public funds, holding its thieves accountable, and confiscating their money obtained from illegal sources,” noting that “the association has stated more than once that corruption constitutes a real danger to the state and society, and there must be a real political will to confront it before it is too late.”
