The French Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that a French diplomat official was killed in an Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip.
The ministry added, in a statement, that the official took refuge with two other colleagues and family members at the home of one of his colleagues at the French consulate in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, near the border with Egypt.
The statement stated that the house was bombed by Israel last Wednesday, wounding the official and killing about 10 people.
“France condemns the bombing of a residential building that led to the death of many other civilians including the French national,” said a statement quoted in AFP.
“We call on the Israeli authorities to fully clarify the circumstances of this bombing, as soon as possible.”
Israeli forces began a ground attack on the Gaza Strip following the attacks launched by the Palestinian Hamas movement last October 7 on Israeli territory across the border, which resulted in the killing of about 1,200 people and the taking of about 240 hostages.
The ground attack was preceded by air bombardments. According to Hamas, about 18,700 people, many of them civilians, were killed.
