Morocco is making significant strides in the realm of technology, securing the top spot on a list of Africa’s 15 most technologically advanced countries, according to a new report issued by Insider Monkey.
With an total score of 208, the Kingdom was the first in the continent to roll out 3G technology. The report also highlighted that the country has yet to deploy 5G networks, a transition that major telecom operators are preparing for.
The score was assigned based on the country’s information and communications technology sector (ICT), knowledge and technology outputs, scientific and technical articles, and high-tech manufacturing.
The Kingdom of Morocco successfully edged out South Africa from the first spot, making the latter closely trailed behind in second place with a score of 207.
Insider Monkey classified Egypt as the third on the list, with a score of 164, followed by Rwanda as the fourth on the continent level, assigning a score of 143, and positioning Kenya, which got a score of 142, in the fifth position.
According to the same source, Mongolia ranks 6th with a score of 129, followed by Senegal (126), Mauritius (123), Zimbabwe (121), Botswana (120), Ethiopia (116), Namibia (108), and Ghana (104). Algeria and Uganda round off the list with scores of 99 and 94 respectively.
The Network Readiness Index (NRI) 2023 previously shed light on technology as one of main Morocco’s strengths. The Kingdom achieved a global ranking of 72nd out of 134 countries in terms of technology.
This ranking looked at sub-pillars such as access, content, and future technologies, with Morocco ranking 69th for access, 71st for content, and 69th for future technologies.
