Michael Gambon, an Irish actor best remembered for his portrayal of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” series, passed away at the age of 82.

The actor’s family, talking to ITV News and the Associated Press, said “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”

One of the founding members of the renowned Royal National Theatre, the renowned actor had a career spanning six decades.

When Gambon was portrayed in Shakespeare’s “Othello” and “Hamlet,” his career took off.

The late actor received four BAFTAs and two SAG awards throughout his career and was knighted in 1999, by Queen Elizabeth II.

Gambon will be remembered for taking over the part of Dumbledore when Richard Harris passed away in 2002 and started to portray the character in 2004’s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
