A charitable organization, School in a Bag, launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of collecting £20,000 to provide school bags for 1,000 children affected by the recent earthquake in Morocco.
The initiative aims to distribute 200 school bags in October, followed by an additional 800 bags in February of next year. These school bags will be delivered to schools and orphanages in Taroudant, a region hit hard by Morocco’s most devastating earthquake in over six decades, which occurred on Sept 8.
Each of these backpacks will contain essential items such as stationery, learning materials, eating utensils, and a hygiene kit. School in a Bag, headquartered in Somerset, emphasized that these donations will play a crucial role in helping children reestablish a sense of normalcy and access therapy services.
The charity is partnering with a Moroccan team based in London, with whom they have previously collaborated to distribute SchoolBags to orphaned children.
The team, led by Abdenbi, is set to transport the first batch of 200 SchoolBags to Morocco at the beginning of October, followed by the remaining 800 in February 2024. Their destination is Taroudant, where the bags will be distributed to children attending local schools and residing in orphanages.
“We have pledged to fund 1,000 SchoolBags for victims of Morocco’s worst earthquake for over 60 years. These SchoolBags will enable children to continue with their education in the recovery phase of the disaster,” stated the School in a Bag website.
It is worth noting that over 9,000 students were transferred to nearby educational institutions, while around 50,000 primary school students found accommodation within their immediate communities as a result of the quake that shook Morocco on Sept 8.
