On Thursday in Rabat, the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired the fifth meeting of the Steering Committee for the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027, which was devoted to assessing the state of implementation of various projects in line with royal instructions.
The meeting provided an opportunity to examine a number of programs currently underway, including the program to interconnect the Sebou and Bouregreg basins, which aims to ensure the supply of drinking water to the Rabat-Casablanca axis.
During the meeting, the government’s seawater desalination projects were also discussed, such as the seawater desalination project in the provinces of El Jadida and Safi, entrusted to the OCP Group under a memorandum of understanding and a concession contract, and the Nador plant.
In a statement to the press at the end of the meeting, the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, affirmed that the programs relating to the transfer of water via the waterway linking the Sebou and Bouregreg basins will continue in order to meet the needs of more than 12 million inhabitants of Rabat, Casablanca and neighboring areas.
He emphasized the committee’s commitment, in line with royal instructions, to pursuing the programs outlined, notably the desalination of water for regions suffering from water shortages, and the acquisition of several mobile desalination and mineral water treatment units to address related issues in these regions.
It should be noted that the national committee responsible for steering the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program was set up by the Head of Government in June 2022. The members of this committee are drawn from the various departments concerned.
