A North Wales mother and 69 angry vacationers are seeking explanations after they claim to have developed gastrointestinal illnesses after staying at the Aqua Mirage resort in Marrakech, Morocco.
The 29-year-old Chelsea Hagan and her 6-year-old daughter Darcey were vacationing at the four-star hotel, according to North Wales Live media, when Chelsea started throwing up blood and was taken to the hospital where she was diagnosed with cryptosporidium, a parasite infection frequently spread to people through contaminated water.
The holiday occurred in September 2022. Darcey fell ill with stomach symptoms, including diarrhea and vomiting, on the day she returned to the UK. She was subsequently admitted to the hospital.
Chelsea alleges that “meat was put next to cooked meat and people would pick at the food with their hands”. She went on to describe one horrible scene where “one of the toilet cubicles by the pool was covered in diarrhea and vomit”.
Sarita Sharma, a specialist international serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing the group of 70 people sharing the same concerns, said: “The first-hand account we’ve heard from Chelsea about her illness and the similar symptoms suffered by Darcey as well as others are deeply concerning. Chelsea was diagnosed with cryptosporidium following hospital tests, and what’s particularly worrying is that she continues to be affected by her illness a year on.
The group members, who all vacationed at the Aqua Mirage resort, suffered illnesses including cryptosporidium, e.coli, campylobacter, and salmonella, all of which can have long-term impacts on health.
