As the school year approaches, Algerian authorities have initiated a hunt for world globes featuring a map of Morocco that includes the Sahara region.
This effort, which is set to expand across the country’s bookstores, has kicked off with much media coverage in the Batna province.
Illustrating this pursuit, an anti-fraud regional inspection team from the Ministry of Commerce in Barika, a city within the Batna province, has launched investigations within bookstores.
Accompanied by a local media outlet, two officials can be seen rigorously searching for complete maps of the kingdom on imported terrestrial globes being sold in the area’s shops.
One of the officials explained to a merchant that he “has violated international law,” that the globes are “inconsistent with the United Nations map,” and that they will be confiscated.
Ironically, the Algerian fraud enforcement official relied on an outdated UN map, which doesn’t include the partition of Sudan, despite the fact that South Sudan gained independence in 2011. Interestingly, South Sudan is not accurately marked on the seized terrestrial globes.
