Taking an emergency contraceptive pill with a painkiller can enhance the effectiveness of birth control medication, according to a study published on August 16 in the journal Lancet.
860 women who were seeking emergency contraceptive medications at the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong participated in the study.
Researchers from Hong Kong and Sweden found that women who combined the oral emergency contraceptive levonorgestrel with the anti-inflammatory painkiller piroxicam recorded a significantly lower rate of pregnancy than women who took the same contraceptive pill and a placebo.
The first half were randomly chosen to take a single 40 mg piroxicam pill along with their single levonorgestrel pill, whereas the other half received a placebo pill along with their contraceptive prescription.
The findings were that only one woman in the piroxicam group conceived compared to seven in the placebo group.
Levonorgestrel, a hormone found in contraceptive pills, and piroxicam(painkiller), according to the scientists’ estimates, together prevented 94.7% of predicted pregnancies, but levonorgestrel alone only prevented 63.4%.
Doctors do not commonly prescribe NSAIDs or painkillers with emergency contraception.
