Pharmaceutical products are now at the top of patent filings in Morocco, showing a strong push in research, innovation, and business creation across several sectors, according to figures released by the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC).

A total of 2414 patent applications were filed during the first ten months of 2025. Of these, 338 applications came from Moroccan sources, while 2076 were filed by foreign applicants.

During the same period, OMPIC granted 516 patents, confirming steady activity in the country’s innovation system.

One of the most notable trends is the sharp rise in Moroccan patent applications. Compared to the same period in 2024, filings of Moroccan origin increased by 39%.

This growth reveals a stronger local presence in innovation, even as foreign applications continue to dominate in absolute numbers.

Universities play a leading role in this progress. Data show that Moroccan universities were the top patent applicants, accounting for 64% of filings of Moroccan origin.

Individual inventors followed with 20%, while companies represented 13%. This confirms the central role of academic research in driving innovation, especially in scientific and technical fields.

By sector, pharmaceutical products ranked first, representing 27% of total patent filings. Biotechnology came next with 14% , followed by fine organic chemistry at 11%.

Materials and metals ranked fourth with 7%, while electrical machinery and devices came fifth at 5%.

Together, these figures show a concentration of innovation in health, life sciences, and advanced industrial technologies.

Beyond patents, business creation also continued to grow at a solid pace. Between January and October 2025, the number of newly created companies increased by 17%.

Legal entities made up the majority of new registrations, accounting for 72%of the total.

Among legal forms, the single-member limited liability company (SARLAU) remained the most popular, representing nearly 65% of new companies, followed by SARLs at 34.4%. Joint-stock companies remained marginal.

Trademark activity also moved upward. The number of certificates issued for trade names rose by 10% compared to 2024, reaching a total of 117394.

During the same period, 17773 trademark registration applications and 8780 renewal requests were filed.  Most of these were national applications, alongside a significant number of international designations.
