The 3rd International Conference on Water and Climate (ICWC3), initiated under the theme “Basin management, key to adaptation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”, wrapped up on Friday in Fez, with the adoption of the Fez Declaration.
This document, resulting from the proceedings and recommendations of this international conference, constitutes a joint commitment to be taken up by the international community at COP-28 in Dubai (November 2023) and at the World Water Forum in Indonesia, scheduled for May 2024.
In particular, the Fez Declaration called for greater sharing of best practices in integrated water resource management, particularly at basin and local level, and for the promotion and inclusion of innovation and new technologies to improve knowledge and use of water resources, as well as better control of water mobilization costs.
It also recommended accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, with a view to ensuring water security, reinforcing communication and awareness-raising on water issues, and improving water management in order to establish real coherence between sectoral policies.
The Fez Declaration reaffirmed the commitment to the Dakar Action Plan for river, lake and aquifer basins, to the Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition, and to actively prepare the basin segment of the political process for the next World Water Forum.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, praised “the remarkable involvement of all participants over two days of intensive work in its various sessions”, as well as the quality of the exchanges that marked the proceedings of the ministerial panel on commitments to water resource management at basin level, to accelerate adaptation to climate change and the achievement of sustainable development goals.
