Moroccan doctors increasingly quitting the public field, study finds

Morocco is experiencing a medical competency shortage as there are only 7.3 doctors available for every 10,000 inhabitants, much below the WHO standard of 23 doctors, as reported by Hespress AR.

Following the findings of the recent study “Brain Drain in the Medical Field in Morocco: Threats or Opportunities?”, the Foundation of Medical Professors in the Free Sector expressed worries about the medical field’s brain outflow.

The medical shortage is a result of several factors including a lack of medical teachers, poor geographic distribution, a weak capability to rehabilitate Moroccan doctors, and insufficient training capacity, according to the report.

The Foundation of Free Sector Medical Professors reported that Morocco loses 600 to 700 doctors annually, or 30% of the already trained doctors, including medical students, specialists, and professors.

Based on the study, more than 80% of medical professionals in training (residents) decline to work in the public sector. Almost 100% of medical professionals who specialize in the public sector decline to increase their involvement in it when their training is complete.

University hospitals faced challenges in 2022, including a significant mismatch between training capacity and labor demand, a qualitative and quantitative deficit of human resources, a dearth of practical training, a lack of technological resources, and the high cost of technical platforms.
