Spanish government Spokesperson, Isabel Rodrigues said Monday that the customs procedures between Ceuta and Melilla are facing several challenges. The minister affirmed that progress is being made in order to open the customs as soon as possible.
Rodgriguez took defended her government’s efforts in working to redirect diplomatic relations with Morocco. The minister emphasised that the necessary work has been already instigated.
The minister admitted that these procedures are complex, requiring aspects such as legal security mechanisms, health measures, and alignment with European standards.
“It is evident that we are committed to continue advancing these relations, with a very clear commitment to the two autonomous cities,” said Isabel Rodriguez.
The remarks of Isabel Rodriguez came as a response to an article published by ‘El Pais’. In an Interview with TVE, the minister said that Morocco has been “obstructing” the plan to open customs in Ceuta and Melilla for several months.
This development paves the way for the reopening of Melilla’s customs, which have remained closed since 2018.
Ceuta and Melilla took a significant step in January towards the establishment of customs facilities in Ceuta in an experimental phase.
