Leader of the left-wing Spanish “Sumar” coalition,Yolanda Diaz has come under scrutiny for her nomination of Tesh Sidi, a separatist affiliated with the Polisario in the upcoming legislative elections in Madrid. This move has raised questions about Diaz’s true intentions and has sparked concerns about her anti-Moroccan stance.
Diaz’s decision to include Tesh Sidi who was born in the Tindouf camps and has been known for her opposition to the Kingdom of Morocco, is seen as a message to Pedro Sanchez, who is seeking a government with a parliamentary majority that supports his foreign policies, including maintaining good relations with Morocco.
Fares Rasheed, Secretary-General of Citizenship and Cooperation of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, confirmed that Tesh Sidi’s nomination practically guarantees a seat for the Polisario in the next parliament. He criticized Diaz for aligning herself with radical leftist ideologies that promote secession and hostility towards Morocco.
Rasheed further stated that Tesh Sidi’s candidacy received significant support from the Algerian regime, which has a vested interest in promoting the radical left to hinder relations with Morocco.
Despite concerns about the potential impact of Tesh Sidi,’s separatist voice on Sanchez’s foreign policy, Rasheed assured that the Spanish Prime Minister remains committed to strengthening relations with Morocco and that the presence of separatist voices in parliament does not exert significant pressure on his stance.
While the Polisario and Algeria may try to exploit Tesh Sidi,’s position in the next parliament for their own interests and obstruct positive steps with Morocco, it is unlikely to have a substantial effect on the deep cooperation between Madrid and Rabat, according to Rachid, the Secretary-General of Citizenship and Cooperation.
