New legislative motion aims to grant citizenship to Jews of Moroccan origins

El Houssain Benmessaoud, a member of the Youth Movement for Reform and Democracy, is launching a legislative motion to grant Jews of Moroccan origin citizenship, paired with many project suggestions to strengthen ties between Moroccan Jews and the government.

In a press release sent to Hespress EN, Benmesssouad explained that the legislative motion finds its constitutional basis in the Constitution’s introduction, especially its second paragraph, and Articles 14 and 71.

“It also finds its political, religious, and cultural basis in HM Mohammed VI, the Commander of the Faithful’s speeches, instructions, as well as the decisions of the Council of Ministers,” he further stated.

The legislative motion seeks to reinstate Moroccan citizenship for generations who were not able to keep or acquire it because of their geographic distance from Morocco or because of the political, security, and legal conditions in their country of residence after their grandparents and ancestors left Morocco.

Besides granting citizenships, Benmessaoud alongside other members of the legislative motion hope for the launch of a TV station for the Jewish community, recognizing Jewish holidays as national holidays in Morocco, and providing the necessary public services that the Jewish community needs at the national and territorial level.

This legislative motion is important because throughout the long history of the Kingdom of Morocco, Jews, and Muslims have lived together harmoniously under the guidance of the Commander of the Faithful, said Benmessaoud.

“Together, they experienced the same struggles and shared the same achievements, including the Spanish expulsion, the revolution of the King and the people, independence, the Green March, the Oath of Allegiance, and accession to the throne ceremonies. Most recently, they celebrated Morocco’s historic success in the World Cup,” noted the same person.

While Jews of Moroccan descent and their allies around the world mobilize their efforts for the wellbeing and causes of Morocco in Washington, DC, Brazil, London, and Israel, there are anti-tolerance groups using all of their political, economic, and security arguments and proxies, to undermine the successful approach of coexistence, moderation and tolerance, alarmed Benmessaoud.

“As the author of this legislative motion,” he stated, “I firmly believe that no one in the world can stop the ties between the Commander of the Faithful and his loyal subjects, whether they are Muslims or Jews. Neither a political party nor a Jamaa-like group, nor a neighboring country with revolutionary aspirations and expansionist ambitions can do so.”

Benmessaoud urges all Moroccans to sign the legislative motion in order to turn it into law and make Morocco “more successful and more harmonious, a country that is home to all Moroccan Muslims and Jews alike”.
