The World Health Organization calls on countries to stop funding the production of tobacco and instead support other sustainable crops that might feed millions of people on World No Tobacco Day
Globally, there are more than 300 million individuals that are severely food insecure. WHO is concerned that toxic tobacco is being grown on more than 3 million hectares of land in more than 120 countries, even in places where people are starving.
The negative effects of tobacco production are highlighted in a new WHO report titled “Grow Food, Not Tobacco,” as well as the advantages of converting to more environmentally friendly food crops for farmers, communities, economies, and the environment.
The report also accuses the tobacco business of using front organizations in agriculture to campaign on behalf of the industry while encouraging farmers to cultivate tobacco by misrepresenting its economic advantages and locking them in a cycle of debt.
World No Tobacco Day recognizes those who are making a difference in tobacco control each year.
Sprina Robi Chacha, a female farmer from Kenya who received an award this year, is being recognized for not just moving from tobacco farming to high protein bean farming also teaching hundreds of other farmers how to do the same in order to build a healthy community.
