The Spanish football league has requested more power to be able to punish incidents of racism, after Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. was racially abused at Valencia on Sunday.
In Spain, Law 19/2007 provides punishments for violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sports. But the power to impose sanctions remains in the hands of the government, rendering La Liga powerless in such cases.
La Liga president Javier Tebas claimed on Thursday that the league can eradicate racism “in six months” if given the power.
“A communique will go to the head of government and political parties requesting the law is urgently modified against racism, xenophobia and intolerance and requesting the (Spanish Football) Federation and LaLiga to have competencies,” Tebas said during a press conference.
