This Monday saw the official start of the “Spanish Language in Morocco” week at the ‘Cervantes’ Spanish culture institute in Rabat, under a partnership that brought together several ambassadors representing Spanish-speaking countries in the kingdom.
The event, in the presence of the Spanish ambassador in Morocco and Spanish-speaking cultural officials, signaled the launch of a series of cultural activities, exhibitions and discussions scheduled throughout the current week.
These activities are run under the slogan “21 countries united under a single Language”, considering the fact that Spanish has approximately 600 million speakers globally and is deemed the “second mother tongue” after Chinese mandarin. Several embassies will partake in the event, namely Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Chile, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Equatorial Guinea, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.
The “Spanish Language Week” seminars discuss the current status quo of the Spanish language in Morocco, its future in the African continent, and the various ways in which this language is spoken globally. They also include several activities open to a wide audience such as presentations of works in Spanish, and the honoring of cultural figures who speak the Cervantes language.
The Cervantes Institute affirmed that “not only is Spanish a gateway to an astonishingly rich and diverse culture, but also a bridge to communication, commerce, education, tourism and sport in twenty-one countries on multiple continents.”
“Spanish is the third most used language on the Internet after English and Chinese, and it occupies the second place in mos digital platforms, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, and Wikipedia.”
They also stated that “The purchasing power of all Spanish speakers represents 9% of the global gross domestic product, and it is the second most important language in the tourism services sector. It is also the language in which the largest amount of published scientific research is written after English.”
This language week in its seventh edition makes, according to its organizers, an opportunity to “discover a language that opens doors to the entire world.”
It is expected that these language celebration days in Morocco will include theatrical and musical performances in Rabat halls, all displaying Spanish works, literature and arts. It is also planned that the activities will be broadcast on the social networking pages of the Spanish-speaking countries represented by Morocco, during the period from the eighth to the twelfth of May.
