Despite a series of bureaucratic hurdles, 93% of the eligible Moroccan seasonal working women for strawberry fields have already arrived in the Spanish city of Huelva, following a administrative delays from both countries.
According to the Spanish government Sub-delegation, the production holdup, which resulted in the delayed summoning of experienced workers, was the cause of certain workers’ tardy arrival.
Félix Sanz, the general secretary of Asaja Huelva, was the initial person to note that “a bureaucratic problem between the two countries” was causing a delay in the entrance of seasonal employees from Morocco, quoted in the according to Huelva Informacion media.
The delegation emphasized that hiring people occurs when production peaks, which usually explains the sudden necessity for personnel.
About 15,000 seasonal workers, including 5,000 new arrivals, are anticipated in the province for the duration of the red fruit season.
After a break since 2019 caused by the closing of the borders with Morocco due to Covid-19, the selection of the workers has finally kicked off. This time, the decision-making process took place in various cities, including Marrakech, Kenitra, and Fez.
The procedure was conducted by the institutions in charge of managing the Huelva Gecco contingent, and Morocco, in December 2022.
