The avocado industry in Morocco completed the season on a high note despite a decline in production at the start of the year, with volumes nearly breaking the previous record and a total production of 40,000 tons.
Hass accounts for 71.8% of the national production of avocados, followed by Fuerte (12.5%), Zutano (7%) Lamb Hass (5.5%), and Bacon (3.2%), according to Zouhir Daissoria, CEO of First Green Land and an expert in avocado farming.
It should be emphasized that these data are not entirely accurate because they represent the condition of exporters, and it is challenging to track sales in the domestic market, reported Fresh Plaza media.
The same source stated that 90% of domestic production is exported.
According to Daissouria, Lamb Hass avocado is genetically predisposed to adapt well to its environment. It doesn’t achieve the dry matter criterion until around January 15, whereas Hass avocado does so as early as November.
Another difference at the commercial level also distinguished the recently concluded season. Lamb Hass is currently being sold for an unheard-of price of up to 33 MAD per kg,d while Fuerte is available for 26 MAD and Hass for 35 MAD.
