House of Councillors Speaker Enaam Mayara on Tuesday met with Canadian Senate President George F. Furey, who is currently on a working visit to Morocco at the head of a large parliamentary delegation.

This visit was an opportunity for the two sides to hold fruitful talks on the quality of Morocco-Canada relations and ways to promote them in various fields, including the revitalization of joint parliamentary activities, according to a statement by the House of Councillors.

After explaining the Moroccan parliamentary system and the role of the House of Councillors in consolidating the institutional edifice, Mayara underlined the importance of the political relations between the two countries, which date back to 1962.

In this context, he expressed his desire for greater parliamentary cooperation between the House of Councilors and the Canadian Senate, through the activation of friendship and cooperation groups in both bodies, through the exchange of experiences and knowledge in areas of common interest.

The Moroccan upper house speaker highlighted the coordination between Morocco and Canada in regional and international forums, the fight against terrorism and climate change, as well as the economic and trade relations that are constantly growing, stressing in this sense that there are real opportunities to develop these relations, especially in the fields of phosphates, agriculture, fisheries, tourism and renewable energies.

For his part, the President of the Canadian Senate welcomed the good relations that have been established between the two countries for more than sixty years, affirming that Canada attaches particular importance to the development of these relations in all areas that unite these two allied countries.

He stressed the importance of strengthening the bilateral dialogue and increasing the exchange of parliamentary visits in order to explore new opportunities for bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of trade and economic, scientific and cultural exchanges.
