Documents from the US Department of Defense have caused a stir on social media in recent days, revealing that Morocco is among the customers set to receive Israel’s advanced surface-to-air missile defense system, the Barak MX.
The revelation is significant, as the system is designed to intercept and destroy various types of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, and drones.
The documents, which outline scenarios in which Israel would provide Ukraine with offensive weapons, are dated February 2023.
While the fact that Morocco has purchased the Barak MX has been known, the documents reveal that delivery will begin in mid-2023, putting Morocco ahead of other customers, such as Colombia, which will have to wait until 2026.
However, questions have been raised about the accuracy of the documents. The Department of Defense has qualified their veracity, noting that some appear to have been modified after the fact.
A Pentagon team is currently assessing the documents.
Leaked photographs of creased printouts suggest that dozens of top-secret US intelligence documents were drafted in February and March 2023, detailing tactical statistics, maps, and strategic-level analyses about Ukraine’s fight with Russia.
At least 38 classified documents, some by the Pentagon’s Joint Staff and others by the CIA and other intelligence agencies, have been leaked.
These documents contain sensitive information about signals intercepts and specific sharing permissions. Among the leaked documents are more than a dozen reports by the Joint Staff describing the military situation in Ukraine on March 1, particularly in the Bakhmut, Kharkiv, and Donetsk regions.
