Data released by the Directorate of Financial Research and Forecasts of the Ministry of Economics and Finance show that the number of Internet users in Morocco experienced a substantial increase last year, by around 40.1%, compared to the level of 2019.
This change is most likely the result of Moroccans’ increased Internet usage during the Covid-19 pandemic and their adoption of remote work and education during the quarantine period.
The same data indicates that by the end of 2022, there were around 35.6 million Internet users, an annual increase of 8.3%.
By the end of 2019, there were about 25.4 million internet users in Morocco, an increase of about 10.2 million over the previous three years.
According to official data, 53 million mobile phone subscribers were registered at the end of 2022, down from 51.3 million at the same time in 2021, a minor 3.2% decrease.
Landline phone usage continues to be steady, increasing by roughly 5.3% to reach 2.6 million subscribers.
It is important to note that the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency did not release any statistics on the telecoms industry last year because the most recent figures it published were from the third quarter of 2021, and since that time, no updated statistics were released.
The same source released the findings of a yearly study in 2021 and indicated that Covid-19’s effects had a substantial impact on Moroccans’ usage of digital technology, leading them to turn to remote jobs, remote schooling, and online shopping.
According to the study, 75% of Moroccans used their phones more frequently during the lockdown in 2020. Eight out of ten people reported an increase in Internet use within the same time frame.
