In conjunction with International Women’s Day, the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation released official data revealing significant progress in the participation and presence of Moroccan women in science, research, innovation, and development programs.

Moroccan female engineers accounted for one of the highest global rates, with a rate of 42.2 percent of engineering graduates in the country, according to UNESCO statistics in 2021. This figure is remarkably higher than France, the United States, Canada, and Japan.

Moroccan universities and institutions of higher education saw 53 percent of female students enrolled in the last university season (2021-2022), with a clear dominant majority in health sciences and its branches.

Moroccan women constitute 66 percent, 58 percent, and 57 percent of the pharmacy, medicine, and dentistry specialties, respectively, and 76 percent in paramedical, nursing, and emergency medicine specialties. In other prominent scientific, engineering, and technological disciplines, females represented a majority in enrollment rates of 56 percent, 50.3 percent, and 54 percent, respectively.

However, the number of female research professors in Moroccan universities remains low, representing only 29 percent of the total number of academic researchers. The figure reflects male dominance within the tasks of research and academic scientific supervision in Moroccan universities. The number of Moroccan female researchers in the doctoral corps counted 17,442, with a representative rate of the total that exceeded 43 percent.

Women also represented 31 percent of the total project leaders and holders who benefited from special operations in support and support in technological and commercial maturity in the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research’s TechTransfer program.

Despite the progress, the representation of women in positions of responsibility in university institutions remains low, with only 14 percent of 549 officials being women. Only about 5 percent of women hold the position of dean of a college or director of an institution.

Nevertheless, the Ministry acknowledged the efforts of two Moroccan female researchers in physics, Dr. Sanae El Fkihi and Dr. Rajaa Cherkaoui El Moursli, in the American classification “AD scientific Index” (2021 edition) on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
