In an interview with Hespress, Ahmed Assid, an Amazigh writer and activist, discussed societal values and individual autonomy regarding consensual sexual relationships, body autonomy, and abortion in Morocco.
Assid highlighted that people’s personal freedom should not be of concern to others since it is a matter of personal choice. However, in Morocco, the body is under scrutiny, and consensual sexual practices are scandalously criminalized, despite being widely accepted in other countries.
The writer argued that the legal frameworks in Morocco are incompatible with modern society, and laws that recognize individualism and personal growth need to be passed. Women should be granted their fundamental rights to independence, and the law should respect all individuals, regardless of religion or identity.
Assid emphasized that individuals should not be held responsible for their personal liberties as long as they do not interfere with the rights of others. He also called for the government to stop holding people responsible for their freedom of belief and to create a society that respects differences.
Regarding artistic expression, Assid stated that artists should be recognized for their craft and not judged based on criteria unrelated to art.
In regards to abortion, the activist emphasized that it is a woman’s fundamental right to choose what happens to her body, including the decision to terminate a pregnancy. He pointed out that illegal abortions can lead to fatalities and criticized the use of the term “bastard” for children who were not aborted.
