The 42nd session of the African Union Executive Council, which is being held in Ethiopia on February 15 and 16, granted Ramtane Lamamra, the Algerian minister of foreign affairs an opportunity to meet with several counterparts from other African countries, some of whom have signed the petition calling for the expulsion of the Polisario front from the African Union.
A press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Lamamra met with the foreign ministers of Senegal, which is currently hosting the African Executive Council session, Libya, the Republic of the Congo, Togo, Angola , Cameroon, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Somalia, and Sierra Leone, as well as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and other officials.
The foreign ministers of Senegal; Congo, Kenya, and Somalia are all part of signatories of the “Tangier Appeal”, which calls to expel the Polisario front from the African Union.
Its signing took place in Marrakech in January, where several African officials reiterated their full commitment to work together and in coordination for the expulsion of the non-state entity from the AU.
The Tangier Appeal admits that the presence of the Polisario front within the AU illustrates the institutional vulnerability of the Organization and represents an undeniable brake on regional and continental economic integration.
According to a statement from Algeria’s foreign ministry, the discussions held in advance of the AU event between the Algerian minister of foreign affairs and the aforementioned African officials centered on the topics on the agenda of the current session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
“Accelerating the process of activating the African Continental Free Trade Agreement” is the theme of the session in question.
The Annual Report of the Union and its Organs will be one of the important topics the Session will discuss.
The election of two judges for the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the selection of six members for the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption will be among the centerpieces of the Executive Council Session.
According to the AU’s official website, there will also be the nomination of three judges for the AU Administrative Tribunal and the appointment of one member to the AU Board of External Auditors for the two-year terms beginning in 2022 and 2023.
