Morocco-Dutch cooperation witnessed a remarkable political rapprochement, especially after the Kingdom of the Netherlands announced in May 2022 that it supports Morocco’s autonomy initiative, considering it “a serious and credible contribution to the political process sponsored by the United Nations to find a solution to the Sahara issue.”
Dutch newspaper “De Telegraph” stated that this rapprochement will reflect positively on one of the most sensitive files for the Netherlands, which is combating crime and drug trafficking through the signing of the “Treaty on Extradition by both sides.”
Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, revealed the imminent resumption of negotiations between the authorities of the two countries in order to sign this treaty.
The Netherlands is betting on the treaty to reduce the impact of organized crime on its society, which she described as “alarming.”
Yeşilgöz said: “We see criminal networks making huge profits from international drug trafficking, and through which they try to infiltrate and corrupt our legal economy through secret banking transactions and money laundering.”
For the minister herself, more intensive cooperation is now urgently needed because criminals are increasingly working at the international level.
She sees that both the Netherlands and Morocco want to further unite efforts against this matter, saying that “a bilateral extradition treaty will bear fruit.”
The Minister said, “In cooperation with Morocco, we can undermine the activities of criminal organizations.”
Dutch authorities are “currently obliged to deal with drug-related violence on their streets and recruit young people into these organizations.”
The government official also confirmed that they will be able to evaluate each extradition request individually, based on the legal frameworks and treaties related to this subject. This will shed light on the implementation procedures after the treaty is presented to Parliament.
The negotiations on the signing of the extradition agreement between Morocco and the Netherlands talks were preceded by second negotiations on the deportation of Moroccan irregular migrants residing in the European country, after Morocco, according to Dutch media, expressed its “readiness to receive them.”
The current Minister of Immigration, Van der Burg, confirmed in previous statements that Morocco issued from August to October 2022 eleven temporary travel documents for deported Moroccans, under which three people were deported.
