Morocco’s Committee on Justice, Legislation and Human Rights in the House of Representatives approved this week the addition of sufficient knowledge of the Amazigh language as a condition for granting Moroccan nationality to foreigners.
The new requirement comes in the wake of a bill introduced by the Istiqlal parliamentary group in the House of Representatives.
Moroccan law stipulates that the acquisition of Moroccan nationality requires 6 conditions.
The first of which is habitual and regular residence in Morocco for the past five years, second is proof of legal age, then good physical and mental health, then good conduct, commendable behavior and non-conviction of the applicant to a prison or judicial sentence, and finally, sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language as well as the availability of sufficient means to lead a decent life.
According to the amendment approved by the Committee after its approval by the government, the fifth condition now states that “sufficient knowledge of Arabic and Amazigh or one of the two languages.”
Chapter five of the Moroccan Constitution stipulates that Tamazight (Amazigh) is an official language of the Moroccan state alongside Arabic.
Moreover, an organic law was enacted to activate its official character in all aspects of public life in 2019, but the implementation of this text on is still lagging, according to Amazigh NGOs and activists.
