The Moroccan Parliament has decided to “review the Kingdom’s relations with the European Union,” following the latter’s recent resolution on journalist Omar Radi’s case, widely condemned in Morocco.
The two chambers of Parliament held a joint plenary on Monday, to discuss the latest positions of the European Parliament regarding Morocco.
Members of the European Parliament strongly criticized lastThursday what they called “the deterioration of press freedom in Morocco,” in particular Omar Radi’s case, saying they were “concerned” by journalists’ situation in the Kingdom.
Today, Moroccan parliamentary representatives collectively condemned the EP’s “orchestrated attack” on Morocco, the body’s transgression on Morocco’s judicial legitimacy and sovereignty, all while applauding some EU partner countries’ support for the Kingdom.
The Social Democratic Constitutional team’s speaker Chaoui Belasal questioned “the EP’s eligibility to direct orders to Moroccan authorities,” a country that has “a strong human rights protection system with effective institutions, and an impartial and independent judicial body keen on protecting the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitution and the law.”
The official rejected all forms of “foreign interference in flagrant violation of national judicial sovereignty,” saying the EP move constitutes “an attempt to influence the judicial decisions that are protected by the Kingdom’s constitution and the international and United Nations conventions ratified by Morocco.”
Belasal pointed out that the Moroccan Parliament’s partnership with the European Union and European Parliament should in no way entail or allow tutelage over the Kingdom’s institutions, who represent an ideal partner with various EU countries, as attested by the leaders of their countries.
Head of the National Independants Rally team Mohamed Ghiath echoed the Moroccan legislative body’s disappointment in the EP resolution, which to him “masks agendas and interests that intersect to produce a surreal stance.”
“They demand not to interfere in the internal affairs of their parliament, but they allowed themselves, rather they appointed themselves guardians over our,” lamented the official.
To Ghiath, Morocco’s recent development, growth and improvement has made the country a pivotal pole and an international actor with a strong presence, which has put a target on it, with successive “international intimidation tactics.”
Following the interventions, the Parliament Speaker announced that both houses have decided to review Morocco’s partnership with the EU, in light of the recent international interference and meddling in the Kingdom’s affairs.
