Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics Mohammed Abdeljalil announced on Monday that the national rail plan requires a budget of MAD 400 billion.

In his answer to an oral question on “the creation of a high-speed train (TGV) linking Oujda to Casablanca and Nador to Tangier,” the official said that the timetable of the Morocco Rail Plan, led by the National Railway Office (ONCF), has secured the needed funding.

Abdeljalil indicated that the implementation of the Rail Plan, which intervenes as part of the development of the national rail network in the long term, includes 1,300 km of high-speed lines, which will connect Tangier to Agadir, and Oujda to Rabat.

The Minister added that 3,800 km of medium-speed lines are included in the plan, noting that “the objective is to serve the entire national territory and to support the country’s economic growth.”

The government and OCF’s ambitious project will connect 43 Moroccan cities instead of the current 23, providing railway transport to 87% of the population.

The hoped connectivity would be an increase of 36%, said the Minister, stressing that ten regional connection centers will be created to organize and improve integration with other modes of transport.
