The tallest volcano in Indonesia erupted on Sunday, sending clouds of ash into the sky and a river of lava across the island that is home to the majority of the nation’s population.

The lava dome at the top of Mount Semeru, which rises 12,060 feet above sea level at its highest point, was eroded and collapsed as a result of monsoon rains, according to a report published on Sunday by The Associated Press.

A total of 61,024 people, 15,256 households, and 162 million USD in infrastructure were estimated to be within 10 kilometers of the volcano and were likely to be impacted. It also stated that there are no concentrated populations within 10-30 kilometers of the volcano.
