After Adidas and Pepsi, French high-end luxury brand Dior is now accused of appropriating Moroccan culture.
This came after the release of its latest saddle bag was released, which the brand claims drew inspiration from Spanish culture, despite the design having very distinguished Moroccan details.
The black saddle bag is decorated with ‘Aakad’ and ‘Dfira’, two key elements of Moroccan traditional outfits.
The bag was first introduced on November 24, it’s part of the designer Maria Grazia Chuiri’s 2023 collection.
The caption of the introduction video explains that the bag takes on stylistic influences from Spanish couture with trimmings of tiny knotted fringe to adorn the edges.
Dior followers did not hesitate to point out in the comments that the design is clearly inspired by Moroccan traditional couture.
Grazia Chuiri is the first female creative director at Dior.
‘About Her’ magazine previously reported that it was Grazia’s choice to hold the show in Marrakech due to her fascination with the city.
Moroccans took to social media to express their distaste for the very obvious cultural appropriation, as they wait for the brand to clarify the matter or give proper credit to Moroccan culture.
