Morocco has been ranked among the top 30 of the safest nations in the world, and the safest country in Africa, according to the Royal Institute of Strategic Studies (IRES).

In its latest dashboard on “the evolution of Morocco’s international positioning,” the IRES says that Morocco’s progress in the security field is thanks to the implementation of new measures that have raised the level of security in the country.

The document published by IRES in its 10th edition includes more than 200 strategic indicators analyzing the results achieved by Morocco in its last years.

The dashboard provides an overview and monitoring of the evolution of Morocco’s position and situation on an international scale, in several areas including global security and internal security.

With regard to global security, IRES first relied on the “global peace” index, specifying that the Kingdom’s positioning was mainly impacted by the instability of the regional environment, but this does not prevent that Morocco, in 2022, maintained its 6th position in MENA.

According to data from the institute, which relied on the “World’s safest countries 2021″ index, the Kingdom is in the top 30 safest nations in the world and is at the top of the list in Africa, having gone from 45th in 2019 to 24th in 2021.

“Morocco’s positioning under this index has improved significantly between 2019 and 2021, thanks in particular to its good management of the health crisis, a component with a significant affect in the 2021 edition of this ranking,” said the report’s editors.

In terms of internal security, the institute stresses that Moroccan authorities have provided “an increasing number of police officers at the service of security, as it is well prepared for new security issues, committed to the service of the Nation and citizens.”

As for the “Fragile State” index, the institute points out that Morocco’s intermediate positioning (85th) remains hindered by some factors including community grievances, migration and inequalities in economic development.

The Institute indicates that at the level of the “global terrorism index,” since 2019, Morocco has been part of the “very low-impact” countries thanks to its active commitment to the fight.

The Kingdom’s encouragement of moderate Islam was also listed as a reason behind the rarity of terrorist attacks in the country.

“Efforts made by Moroccan security authorities in the fight against extremism will certainly allow the Kingdom to regain its place among countries without a terrorist impact in the near future.”

Morocco is constantly leading actions for the dismantling of terrorist cells, welcomed by the international community and the people, which contributes to the peaceful environment highlighted in the report.

However, the dashboard states that the rate of aggression increased by 87% between 2003 and 2018.

The report explains this by “the increase in the consumption of psychotropic drugs, relatively uncontrolled urbanization and the increase in inequalities.”
