A study published on Monday in the journal PNAS describes recent footage of a wild adult chimpanzee showing her mother a leaf, seemingly just to share the experience with her.
“This is the first promising kind of suggestion that this (behavior) might not be uniquely human, and that chimpanzees might be capable and motivated to do this,” said study coauthor Katie Slocombe, a professor of psychology at the University of York in the United Kingdom; quoted by CNN.
The study’s authors noted that more instances of these interactions are required to fully comprehend the meaning behind the gesture, but the observation may show that chimpanzees exhibit a social behavior previously believed to be unique to their human relatives.
