Morocco is now the world’s fifteenth-largest fruit exporter in terms of value, driven by improved transportation networks, and a concentrated effort on land devoted to fruit production, according to a United States Department of Agriculture report.

Although less than 2% of the world’s fruit exports come from Morocco, the country has made significant progress over the past six years to increase offer.

Morocco’s fruit exports more than doubled from $729 million to more than $1.5 billion between 2016 and 2021, making up more than a third of all agricultural exports in that year.

Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries, which now make up 60% of the increase in fruit exports since 2016, were a major contributor to the growth. The export of avocados and watermelons has increased almost continuously but more subtly, and the exports of mandarins and oranges have also contributed to overall growth, despite recent declines.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) most recent estimates from 2019 show that 66 percent of its land area is used for agriculture, with more than 7 percent going toward the production of fruit.

Recent transportation infrastructure investments have made it possible for perishable goods to travel from the southern Sahara region to Spain within 48 hours of packing, which has facilitated an increase in fruit exports.

The largest container port in the Mediterranean is in Morocco, and funds have also been invested in the development of a new deep-water port in Dakhla, which is expected to be operational by the year 2027.

With Spain and France being the main destinations, the European Union (EU) continued to be the top market for fruit exports in 2021, accounting for 70% of exports by value.
