Canada has unveiled plans for a big increase in the number of immigrants entering the country, with a target of 500,000 arriving each year by 2025, in an effort to address a critical labour shortage.

Sean Fraser, Canada’s Immigration Minister, revealed the new plan on Tuesday.

“Make no mistake. This is a massive increase in economic migration to Canada,” Fraser said. “We have not seen such a focus on economic migration as we’ve seen in this immigration levels plan.”

Canada broke its all-time immigration record by welcoming over 405,000 immigrants in 2021 and is looking to welcome nearly 432,000 immigrants this year, rising to 500,000 in 2025.
