A massive asteroid that has been hiding from the sun’s glare has been found by astronomers, and it may one day draw closer to Earth.

Astronomers, who shared their findings in the Astronomical Journal, have dubbed the 1.5-kilometer (0.9-mile) diameter asteroid, which is the largest potentially dangerous asteroid discovered in the past eight years, a “planet killer.”

One kilometer (0.6 miles) or larger near-Earth asteroids “would have a disastrous impact on life as we know it,” said lead study author Scott S. Sheppard.

The astronomers anticipate discovering more planet killers.

The asteroid, known as 2022 AP7, was able to go unnoticed for so long because of its orbital location between Venus and Earth.
