The Acting Executive Director of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) Aija Kalnaja, held a meeting with the wali, Director of Migration and Border Surveillance at the Ministry of Interior, Khalid Zerouali, as part of the Frontex-Morocco meeting.
The third in a series of annual discussions under the joint committee Frontex-Morocco, the director saluted Morocco’s efforts and role as a “trustworthy and credible partner“ in the fight against irregular migration.
“Today I welcome the Moroccan delegation to Frontex, on the sidelines of the international conference of border police, which is held from 26 to 28 October in the Polish capital.”
“I am very grateful for the arrival of a delegation so rich and quality,” she stated in a statement to MAP.
The European official highlighted the role of Morocco as a “gateway” to the African continent, stressing the close collaboration between Morocco and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in the face of common challenges.
The meeting between Aija Kalnaja and Khalid Zerouali focused on cooperation in the field of border management.
“Frontex recognizes the tremendous efforts made by the Moroccan authorities to address the challenges of migrant smuggling, human trafficking and other types of cross-border crime,” said the acting executive director.
Both sides committed to work together to implement a joint roadmap, including activities in the field of coast guard cooperation, risk analysis and counter-trafficking.
