Morocco has decided to provide fertilizer aid to the Ministry of Agriculture of Saint Lucia, according to a recent press release, to help the farmers in the country get over a slow agricultural production season.

3,924 bags of fertilizer from Morocco have been distributed to a number of non-banana farmers on the basis of criteria established by regional extension offices, to help them meet the challenges of soil fertility and boost production.

An annual supply of fertilizer is planned through the Moroccan Soil Fertility Project, a partnership between the Lucian Ministry of Agriculture and Morocco that ensures specially formulated fertilizers to meet local soil health needs.

Counselor of the Moroccan Embassy in St. Lucia Said Al Melaji says his government is proud to be part of creating an enabling environment for a thriving local agri-food economy.

“The cooperation relations between Morocco and Saint Lucia are, in recent years, dynamic in various areas. In this regard, I welcome the achievements in the agricultural sector and the successful results of cooperation between Morocco and Saint Lucia. I hope that this grant will further strengthen the capacity of Saint Lucia in agricultural development,” he said.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture warns that there are a number of “critical” areas that need to be considered when designing the State’s food security and sovereignty agenda, including “increasing input costs, delays in shipping supplies, adapting to changing climatic conditions, pest and disease management to ensure soil and plant health.”

Minister of Agriculture of Saint Lucia Alfred Prospere describes the donation from Morocco as “an illustration of an agricultural partnership that provides an appropriate response to a sector in need.”

“We are aware of the food security concerns, and it is an issue that affects us globally.Saint Lucia being a small country, it can have an impact on our farmers. So it is important that we reach out to our farmers, because they are the ones responsible for producing our food,” he said.
