The head of Moroccan diplomacy Nasser Bourita welcomed Thursday, the “new place” Germany occupies in Morocco, during a joint press conference with his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock.
At the end of his meeting with the head of German diplomacy, who’s on a two-day official visit to Morocco, Bourita said that this visit has helped to concretize the new place of Germany in Morocco since the partners put an end to diplomatic differences this year.
The two countries will establish an ambitious multidimensional partnership and establish a continuous dialogue based on “mutual respect and mutual cooperation.”
This personal visit is the second opportunity for direct bilateral dialogue between the two heads of diplomacy since the end of the diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Berlin, which had lasted nearly a year.
Bourita said that the two sides have agreed on several topics of common interest, including renewable energy and climate. The officials’ discussions focused on green hydrogen and how the two countries can work together on an equal footing to develop this emerging sector of increasing importance.
The place of women in society was also at the heart of bilateral discussions, as well as potential ways to develop bilateral investment and trade.
In addition, Bourita stressed the role of Germany in deepening relations between Morocco and the European Union.
The triangular cooperation between Germany, Morocco and Africa, was also mentioned by the Moroccan FM at the press conference.
This will be an important element of future cooperation between the two countries, who have agreed to take their partnership to a new level and hold high-level meetings every year.
At the international and regional level, the two sides discussed several issues including the situation in the Sahel including Mali, the Middle East, the Sahara.
The two countries have expressed the conformity of their views on all these issues, especially on Mali, Ukraine and on the Western Sahara, as the head of Moroccan diplomacy welcomed “Germany’s position” on the latter.
Prior to this face-to-face contact with Bourita, the two diplomats held a videoconference last February to overcome the crisis phase. The two ministers should now meet every two years to continue their multidimensional strategic dialogue.
Their first discussion by videoconference had allowed “to start a new dialogue to overcome misunderstandings and deepen the multifaceted bilateral relations,” noted a statement of the German Foreign Ministry, stressing that both sides agreed to revive “the special quality of bilateral relations in all areas, in the spirit of proven policies, and consistency and mutual respect.
