The German Chamber of Commerce and Industry ‘AHK Morocco’, has decided against canceling its Oktoberfest event, despite 17,000 Moroccans signing The Identity Promotion Forum petition calling for the event to be banned.
In an official statement, AHK told Hespress EN that first and foremost, “this is not a festival, it is a private event, as opposed to what has been circulating on social media.”
Second, the private event is meant for the collaborators of AHK, members of the german chamber, and its partners. The tickets are not for the public. The same activities that have been reported will resume, including beer and german dish tasting in Bouskoura.
The beer tasting event is still going to be held in Casablanca this upcoming October despite AHK Morocco deleting all of the posts related to it from their official website and Facebook page.
Many Moroccans are still asking for more signings on the petition calling the event a heinous act, and a contradiction to Moroccan laws, Islamic Sharia, and Moroccan customs.
The petition has now reached over 21,000 signatures.
The organization behind the petition explain that their decision to open this petition is to address it to the Moroccan authorities in order to prevent the authorization of this festival, adding that it is “contrary to the wise diplomacy of countries which must respect the specificities of the States in which their institutions operate.”
The announcement of the Oktoberfest stirred controversy, and a lot of Moroccans expressed their thoughts on social media explaining why the event should not take place in Morocco for various reasons.
