The Spanish Red Cross announced the rescue of hundreds of victims of human trafficking, including Moroccan women who were sexually exploited.
The Red Cross in Spain said in a report that 830 people were rescued in the case of trafficking and sexual exploitation in the first half of 2022, including 280 sexually exploited women, 201 of whom are of Moroccan origin, in addition to 425 other people in a case of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
The Red Cross told the story of Fatoumata, a 17-year-old girl from Côte d’Ivoire, who had been involved in sex work in Morocco and then managed to leave for Spain, where she was taken care of by the organization and is still receiving support from a multidisciplinary team of professionals to continue her normal life.
The Red Cross has monitored an increase in trafficking cases this year, with numbers already exceeding those of 2021.
The Red Cross calls for the issuance of a comprehensive anti-trafficking law that protects all persons (adults and minors) who experience these situations in any kind of exploitation.
The same organization said: “The comprehensive law, with a focus on human rights and a multi-pronged approach to gender, will lead to the protection of people, better knowledge and the adaptation of policies and responses to combat human trafficking.”
They stressed that “various migration crises, arising from armed conflicts to situations arising from climate change, among many other reasons, lead to the expulsion of many people from their lands. For this reason, it is necessary to facilitate migration in decent conditions to reach safe places.”
