National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientist Tamitha Skov is anticipating a flare erupting from the sun to hit Tuesday, leading to radio and GPS disruptions in many areas in the world.
Solar flares cause solar storms, which could possibly have major repercussions on our planet.
This phenomenon is part of a solar cycle that began at the end of 2019. Solar storms are fairly common, the most intense one on record is the ‘Carrington Storm’ from 1859, named after astronomer Richard Carrington, who witnessed the event.
Tamitha Skov took to Twitter to alarm the world of what is going to occur due to these disruptions, saying: “A snake-like filament launched as a big solar storm while in the earth-strike zone. NASA predicts an impact in early July 19. Strong aurora shows possible with this one, deep into mid-latitudes. Amateur radio and GPS users signal disruptions on Earth’s night side.”
Solar flares are intense bursts of radiation coming from the release of magnetic energy associated with sunspots, according to NASA.
Depending on the strength of the eruption, solar flares are classified into A, B, C, M, and X classes, with A being the least powerful, and X being the most powerful.
Today’s solar flare is speculated to be of G-3 magnitude. It could possibly generate northern lights in some regions of the earth.
