United Metallurgical Company (OMK) denied in a press release published by Sputnik claims made by the Nigerian ambassador in Russia, alleging the company has become the main investor in the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.

Nigeria ambassador, Abdullahi Shehu previously revealed in an interview with the Russian press agency, Ria Novosti, that United Metallurgical Company is taking part in the project.

“They are (OMK) already involved in this process. They are among the main investors of this project.” He gave no further details about OMK’s implication or role in the project.

The Nigerian Minister of State Timipre Sylva has previously declared to Reuters that the Russians “are very desirous to invest in this project”.

This information was quickly denied by the Russian company itself, as an immediate reaction to this declaration. The company put out a press release published by Sputnik another Russian press agency, which explained that the company’s participation as an investor is not envisioned.

The Nigeria-Morocco pipeline is a high-impact project that will affect a population of 340 million people; it will cross 13 countries while connecting three others, namely Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria.

The upcoming exports of gas to Europe will contribute to opening various economic growth opportunities.

The countries through which the pipeline will pass will be able to produce enough electricity for domestic consumption, manufacturing activities, and agricultural production. It should also create job opportunities and improve the living conditions of the people in those countries.

A German company was designated for the second phase of the project study. It’s a joined partnership between ILF Consulting and DORIS Engineering. The services of this partnership include the design of the onshore and offshore pipeline, the compressor station, engineering surveys, environmental and social impact assessment, land acquisition studies, and project implementation framework.

The project is investigating the potential for using renewable energy sources to operate the pipeline and reduce the project’s carbon footprint. The Nigerian ambassador declared that the project is moving forward without any problems.

The project calls for the implication of international partners from the public and private sectors. It represents a long-term partnership for collective action to accelerate economic growth.

According to Abdullahi Shehu, Nigeria is now ready to become a candidate for BRICS membership in the near future. It was also mentioned that Iran and Argentina expressed their desire to join as well.
