American actor Dominic Fike stirred controversy during his first time in Morocco as a guest in the Yves Saint Laurent men’s spring collection, held this July 15.
it’s beautiful, it’s very weird, they’ve got all the camels and things, this is exactly how I imagined, we are in Africa right?”
This statement caused negative reactions from Dominic’s fans, especially Moroccan ones. They used Twitter and Instagram to criticize what he said, calling him a ‘typical American’ and blaming him for limiting Morocco’s cultural diversity to what he has seen on his first visit to the desert of Agafay, calling his words “a very stereotypical speech”.
Yves Saint Laurent held his spring 2023 Men’s outing in Marrakech’s Agafay Desert. Numerous VIPs flew to attend the show including the Palestinian model Anwar Hadid, the legendary actress Catherine Deneuve and the famous HBO show Euphoria’s star, Dominic Fike.
Some fans advised him to read a few articles about the country to get to know more about its geography. On the other hand, Brazilian Instagram influencer Bruno Astuto commented on Fike’s statement saying: “Morocco is an amazing country, with outstanding culture and people. Much more than camels. And yes, it is in Africa.”
Moroccan model Malika el-Maslouhi was at a loss of words and left a very expressive “LOL” under Fike’s video that was posted by WWD on Instagram.
The show was considered serene and otherworldly. The setting had a ring-like figure, with a haze-emitting structure set against the Moroccan sunset as YSL models circled around in various tuxedos with linear shapes, not unlike the women’s collection show that was held in Paris earlier this year.
Marrakech and Yves Saint Laurent go way back, he first discovered the city on 1966 to escape Paris’ hectic fashion world. He, later on, opened the famous YSL museum in 2017 to showcase his work in the beautiful city.
