Fuel prices in Morocco will decrease starting this Saturday, following a drop in the price of the oil barrel on the international market.
Citizens and professionals are waiting for the prices to continue on a downward trend, after fuel’s price tag reached unprecedented highs this year in Morocco.
The anticipated drop will not be substantial, ranging round MAD 1 for both diesel and gasoline, and will depend on the various distributers in the country.
Fuel selling prices depend on, in addition to international prices and trends, the stock and profit margins of individual distributing companies. This also explains why, during the initial price hike, some stations continued offering slightly lower prices for the good.
Some companies would not use the new prices until the beginning of next week, in accordance with internal policies in a market where fuel prices had not been capped in years.
Currently, the price of diesel is MAD 16.68 in service stations, while that of gasoline is MAD 17.61 and can go up to MAD 17.71.
Jamal Zarikom, President of the National Federation of Owners, Distributers and Managers of Gas Stations in Morocco, told Hespress AR that the recent rises in fuel prices in general come in the context of international increases for the vital substance.
The sector professional stressed that this rise harms gas stations in Morocco, as well as the consumer, as a result of the high cost of this substance, noting that the profit margin of the stations “remains limited and fixed.”
The same speaker stressed the need to open a real and serious discussion between the actors in the sector, especially the Ministry of Energy Transition, and to try to open a national discussion that “will inevitably lead to alleviating the suffering of the professional, the consumer and the citizen in general, albeit partially.”
