Approximately 15,000 people were treated for heat stroke and exhaustion in a Japanese hospital including numerous fatalities, due to a record high heat wave in the country.
According to official statistics shared on Wednesday, 14,353 people were transferred to hospitals across Japan rom June 27th to July 3rd, as a result of extreme weather.
This is the highest number of heat stroke cases that the country has witnessed since 2010, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Japenese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication.
Of all cases, 57% were elderly, 33% were adults, and the rest were young people and children, while last week’s fatalities amounted to 27, all associated with high temperature.
“In addition to the unusual heat wave, some people may have had difficulty adjusting to the sharp rise in temperature,” an agency official told Japanese media outlet Kyodo.
Last Thursday, the temperature in central Tokyo reached 36.4 degrees Celsius, a historical record for the month of June.
In neighboring Saitama and Chiba prefectures, the temperature on an aforementioned day reached 39 and 36 degrees respectively.
Japan has been facing a heat wave with the highest recorded temperatures in its history by the end of last month, at the same time, its energy production is diminishing due its dependence on fossil fuels, whose supplies have become more expensive and scarce as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Moreover, the country is maintaining regular to energy alerts, but remains concerned about possible supply network saturation.
