Morocco is set to officially open its embassy in Israel this summer, said Foreign Affairs Minister Yaïr Lapid on Wednesday, according to The Times of Israel.
During the press conference held on Wednesday, Lapid revealed that his Moroccan counterpart, Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita is expected to travel this summer to officially open the Kingdom’s embassy in Israel.
The head of Israeli diplomacy did not give an exact date regarding Bourita’s visit as well as the date of the opening of the Moroccan embassy in Tel Aviv.
Israel is already represented in Morocco with a liaison office in Rabat opened in August 2021, headed by David Govrin, but has not upgraded the mission to an embassy, said the same source.
Morocco opened its liaison office in Tel Aviv in February of 2021.
Israeli diplomatic sources also revealed to the press that Israel will upgrade its representation in Morocco around the same time as Bourita’s visit to Israel, said the Times of Israel.
Lapid lately visited Morocco on the first anniversary of the normalization of relations at the end of last year.
The Israeli official invited his Moroccan counterpart Bourita to visit Israel, who accepted his request.
Additionally, several Israeli officials visited Morocco in order to reach agreements in different sectors, including innovation and technology, military defense, education, trade, and tourism.
The strengthening of diplomatic ties between Israel and Morocco constitutes the fruit of the trilateral Abraham accords agreement, involving the US since December 2020.
The US also opened another consulate in Dakhla, in addition to those in Rabat and Casablanca.
