Morocco steps up support for stranded nationals as Middle East war disrupts flights

Morocco’s foreign ministry said it activated crisis support measures for Moroccans in Gulf countries after the latest Middle East escalation disrupted flights and closed airspace across much of the region, with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita saying embassies and consulates had been mobilised under royal instructions to assist residents, tourists and stranded travellers.

In a written parliamentary reply reported by Hespress, Bourita said the ministry set up crisis cells at its headquarters and across Moroccan diplomatic missions in the region, alongside emergency phone lines and round the clock duty teams to answer questions and direct citizens toward available routes home after most targeted states closed their skies and suspended air traffic.

He added that several Gulf countries had taken steps to improve conditions for stranded foreigners, including covering accommodation costs, extending visas and allowing travel date changes without fees.

Bourita said many Moroccans had already managed to leave affected areas, either through land crossings between Gulf states, helped in part by Saudi facilitation measures for residents arriving from neighbouring countries, or on flights rescheduled after the threat level eased, including services operated by Royal Air Maroc.

The broader disruption is well documented. Reuters reported in late February and March that airlines across Europe and the Gulf suspended routes to destinations including Dubai and Doha as war widened and key air corridors were repeatedly shut.

Royal Air Maroc currently says its Doha flights are cancelled through June 30 and Dubai flights through May 31, extending earlier suspensions that had initially been set only until mid April.
